The Scan Premier FFP2 Valved Disposable Dust Masks are comfortable, lightweight particulate respirators designed to provide respiratory protection against suitable airborne dust, fine particles and mists during construction, woodworking, maintenance and DIY activities.
Featuring an integrated exhalation valve, these disposable masks are designed to make breathing out easier by allowing warm, moist exhaled air to escape more readily.
The filtering facepiece is constructed from the filter material itself and is designed to cover the nose, mouth and chin.
For improved comfort and fit, the Scan Premier Masks incorporate elasticated retaining straps, an adjustable nose clip, a soft foam nosepiece and a non-irritating inner facepiece.
With a stated FFP2 protection classification and conformity to EN149:2001+A1:2009, these valved respirators offer a minimum tested filtration efficiency of 94% against the specified laboratory test aerosols.
They may be suitable for appropriately assessed construction, woodworking and general maintenance tasks where FFP2 particulate protection is sufficient.
Important: FFP2 masks are not suitable for every hazardous dust exposure. Tasks involving respirable crystalline silica, hazardous fibres or high airborne particle concentrations may require higher-rated respiratory protection and additional dust-control measures.

FFP2 Particulate Respiratory Protection
The Scan Premier Valved Dust Masks have a stated FFP2 filtering facepiece classification.
FFP2 is the intermediate protection class under EN149 and provides higher tested particulate filtration performance than FFP1.
Under EN149, FFP2 respirators must achieve a minimum 94% filtration efficiency against specified laboratory test aerosols.
This filtration rating does not guarantee an exact 94% reduction in exposure for every wearer.
Actual protection depends on the fit of the respirator, the facial seal, correct selection and workplace conditions.
In UK workplace respiratory protection guidance, correctly selected and fitted FFP2 respirators are generally associated with an assigned protection factor (APF) of 10.
Important: FFP2 respirators are designed for suitable airborne particles, not gases, solvent vapours or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Integrated Exhalation Valve
A key feature of the Scan Premier FFP2 Disposable Masks is the integrated exhalation valve.
The valve allows exhaled air to escape more easily, helping reduce breathing resistance during exhalation.
This can make the respirator more comfortable during physically demanding tasks.
The valve may also help reduce the build-up of warmth and moisture inside the facepiece.
Benefits of the Exhalation Valve
-
Easier exhalation
-
Reduced exhalation resistance
-
Improved comfort during suitable work activities
-
Helps release warm, moist air
-
Practical for tasks involving physical movement
Important: The exhalation valve is not intended to filter outgoing breath. These masks should not be selected where respiratory source control or filtration of exhaled air is required.
Filtering Facepiece Construction
The Scan Premier FFP2 Masks are manufactured with a filtering facepiece made from the filter material itself.
This design combines the respirator body and filtering medium into one disposable product.
There are no separate replaceable filter cartridges.
The mask is designed to cover the nose, mouth and chin while forming a seal against the wearer's face.
An effective facial seal is essential to achieving the intended level of respiratory protection.
Adjustable Nose Clip
The masks incorporate an adjustable nose clip that allows the upper section of the respirator to be shaped around the bridge of the nose.
Correct adjustment helps reduce gaps through which unfiltered air could enter.
The nose clip should be moulded into position according to the manufacturer's fitting instructions.
Soft Foam Nosepiece
Each Scan Premier Mask features a soft foam nosepiece designed to provide additional comfort around the nose.
The foam cushions the contact area between the respirator and the face.
Combined with the adjustable nose clip, it helps support a comfortable fit during suitable tasks.
However, the foam does not guarantee a secure seal for every facial shape.
Elasticated Retaining Straps
The Scan Premier Valved Disposable Masks feature elasticated retaining straps designed to hold the respirator securely in position.
Correct strap placement helps maintain an effective seal.
Always follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions and avoid modifying the straps.
Non-Irritating Inner Facepiece
The masks feature a non-irritating inner facepiece designed to improve comfort during wear.
Together with the soft foam nosepiece and exhalation valve, this helps make the Scan Premier Masks a practical choice for appropriately assessed tasks requiring disposable respiratory protection.
If the respirator causes irritation or cannot be fitted securely, stop using it and select a suitable alternative.
Suitable for Woodworking & Hand Sanding
The Scan Premier FFP2 Valved Dust Masks may be suitable for certain woodworking and sanding tasks where a risk assessment confirms that FFP2 protection is adequate.
Potential applications include:
-
Suitable hand sanding
-
General woodworking maintenance
-
Certain wood and MDF handling tasks
-
Selected workshop activities
-
Appropriate DIY projects
Important: Wood and MDF dust can be hazardous, particularly when fine airborne particles are generated. Effective dust extraction and suitable work methods should be used alongside appropriate respiratory protection.
Construction, Masonry & Plaster Work
The supplied product information identifies applications involving:
-
Brick dust
-
Concrete dust
-
Plaster dust
-
Masonry work
-
Certain metalworking operations
-
Loft insulation
These activities can produce different respiratory hazards depending on the materials and tools involved.
Cutting, drilling or grinding brick and concrete can release respirable crystalline silica, which can cause serious long-term lung disease.
Certain metalworking tasks can also generate hazardous airborne particles.
Important: Do not assume FFP2 protection is sufficient for all masonry, concrete, metalworking or insulation tasks. Follow a suitable exposure assessment and select higher-rated respiratory protection where required.
These masks are not intended for welding applications.
Understanding FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3
EN149 defines three main filtering facepiece respirator classes.
| Respirator Class | Minimum Filter Efficiency | Typical UK Assigned Protection Factor |
|---|---|---|
| FFP1 | 80% | 4 |
| FFP2 | 94% | 10 |
| FFP3 | 99% | 20 |
These filtration efficiencies are measured under standardised laboratory test conditions.
Assigned protection factors depend on correct respirator selection, fitting and use.
FFP1 – Basic Particulate Protection
FFP1 respirators provide the lowest EN149 filtering facepiece protection class.
They may be suitable for certain low-level particulate hazards.
FFP2 – Higher Particulate Protection
FFP2 respirators provide increased tested filtration performance and may be suitable for appropriately assessed fine dust and particulate exposures.
FFP3 – Highest Filtering Facepiece Class
FFP3 respirators provide the highest tested filtration performance among EN149 filtering facepiece classifications.
They are commonly selected for more hazardous particulate exposures where the risk assessment requires higher protection.
Important: FFP protection classes are not defined by fixed particle-size bands such as larger than 5 microns, between 2 and 5 microns or smaller than 2 microns.
The correct class depends on the airborne hazard, exposure concentration and required protection factor.
EN149:2001+A1:2009 Standard
The Scan Premier FFP2 Valved Masks are specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009.
EN149 covers filtering half masks designed to protect against airborne particles.
The standard includes requirements relating to:
-
Filtration performance
-
Breathing resistance
-
Inward leakage
-
Practical performance
-
Product markings and information
The supplied specification confirms the FFP2 class but does not identify additional markings such as NR, R or D.
Check the manufacturer's current packaging and declaration of conformity for the complete certification details.
How to Fit Scan Premier FFP2 Masks
Correct fitting is essential for effective respiratory protection.
-
Inspect the mask and exhalation valve for damage before use.
-
Position the respirator over the nose, mouth and chin.
-
Secure the elasticated retaining straps according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Adjust the nose clip around the bridge of the nose.
-
Check that the mask sits securely against the face.
-
Perform the manufacturer's recommended user seal check.
-
Reposition or replace the mask if an adequate seal cannot be achieved.
For workplace use, tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment generally requires a suitable face-fit test for the individual wearer.
Important: Facial hair in the sealing area can prevent an effective fit and reduce protection.
Disposable & Single-Shift Use
The supplied instructions state that the masks should be disposed of after each period of work or an eight-hour shift.
Replace the respirator sooner if it becomes:
-
Damaged
-
Wet or heavily soiled
-
Difficult to breathe through
-
Contaminated
-
Unable to maintain a secure fit
-
Affected by a damaged or malfunctioning valve
The eight-hour period should not be treated as a guaranteed safe wearing duration in all conditions.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and workplace respiratory protection procedures.
Respiratory Safety Precautions
These FFP2 masks are intended for particulate respiratory protection within the limits of their classification.
They are not suitable for protection against:
-
Toxic gases
-
Solvent vapours
-
Carbon monoxide
-
Oxygen-deficient atmospheres
-
Unknown airborne contaminants
-
Hazards requiring protection beyond FFP2 capability
-
Welding operations without specific suitability confirmation
-
Environments requiring air-supplied breathing apparatus
Valved respirators are also unsuitable where filtering the wearer's exhaled breath is required.
For hazardous dust-generating work, use effective extraction, ventilation and other appropriate controls alongside correctly selected respiratory protective equipment.
