The Scan FFP2 Fold Flat Disposable Dust Masks are lightweight filtering facepiece respirators designed to provide respiratory protection against suitable airborne dust, fine particles and mists encountered during construction, woodworking, maintenance and DIY activities.
Featuring a practical fold-flat design, these disposable respirators are made from the filtering material itself and are designed to cover the nose, mouth and chin.
The masks incorporate elasticated retaining straps, an adjustable nose clip and a soft foam nosepiece to help provide a comfortable, secure fit.
A non-irritating inner facepiece offers additional comfort during use, making these masks a practical choice for appropriately assessed tasks involving airborne particulate hazards.
With a stated FFP2 protection classification and conformity to EN149:2001+A1:2009, the Scan Fold Flat Masks provide a higher level of particulate filtration than FFP1 respirators.
Potential applications include suitable woodworking, hand sanding, construction maintenance and other dust-generating tasks where a risk assessment confirms that FFP2 protection is adequate.
Important: FFP2 respirators are not suitable for every hazardous dust exposure. Tasks involving respirable crystalline silica, certain hazardous fibres or high concentrations of airborne contaminants may require higher protection and additional dust-control measures.

FFP2 Particulate Respiratory Protection
The Scan FFP2 Fold Flat Dust Masks are classified as FFP2 filtering facepiece respirators.
FFP2 is the intermediate protection class under EN149, providing a higher level of tested particulate filtration than FFP1.
Under the standard, FFP2 respirators must achieve a minimum 94% filtration efficiency against the specified test aerosols.
This laboratory filtration rating does not guarantee an equivalent reduction in exposure for every wearer.
Actual protection depends on correct mask selection, facial fit, seal integrity, wearing time and workplace conditions.
In UK workplace respiratory protection guidance, correctly selected and fitted FFP2 respirators are generally associated with an assigned protection factor (APF) of 10.
This means they may be suitable where a properly conducted exposure assessment identifies a required protection factor within that capability.
Important: FFP2 classification does not establish protection against gases, vapours or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Convenient Fold-Flat Design
The Scan Fold Flat Disposable Respirators feature a compact construction designed for convenient storage before use.
Unlike rigid moulded respirators, fold-flat masks can be kept in a relatively flat form until required.
The mask opens to cover the nose, mouth and chin, providing a practical filtering facepiece design.
The filtering material forms the body of the respirator itself, eliminating the need for separate replaceable filter cartridges.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when opening and fitting the mask.
Adjustable Nose Clip for a Secure Fit
Each Scan FFP2 Mask incorporates an adjustable nose clip.
This allows the upper section of the respirator to be shaped around the bridge of the nose.
Correct adjustment helps reduce gaps where unfiltered air could enter.
The nose clip should be moulded into position using the manufacturer's recommended fitting technique.
A secure facial seal is essential for effective respiratory protection.
Soft Foam Nosepiece
The masks feature a soft foam nosepiece designed to improve comfort around the nose.
This helps cushion the contact area between the respirator and the face.
Combined with the adjustable nose clip, it supports a more comfortable fit during suitable work activities.
However, the foam nosepiece does not guarantee an adequate seal for every facial shape.
Elasticated Retaining Straps
The Scan FFP2 Fold Flat Masks include elasticated retaining straps designed to hold the respirator securely in position.
Correct strap placement is important for maintaining an effective fit.
The straps should be positioned according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Do not modify, knot or reposition the straps in a way that could compromise the seal.
Non-Irritating Inner Facepiece
The masks incorporate a non-irritating inner facepiece intended to improve comfort.
This feature is useful during tasks where a respirator may need to be worn for extended periods.
The lightweight construction, soft nosepiece and adjustable fitting features work together to provide a practical disposable respiratory protection solution.
If the mask causes irritation or cannot be fitted securely, stop using it and select a suitable alternative.
Suitable for Woodworking & Hand Sanding
The Scan FFP2 Masks may be appropriate for certain woodworking and sanding activities where the exposure assessment confirms that FFP2 protection is sufficient.
Potential applications include:
-
Suitable hand-sanding tasks
-
General woodworking maintenance
-
Some wood and MDF handling activities
-
Appropriate DIY repairs
-
Selected workshop tasks
Important: Sanding wood and MDF can generate hazardous fine dust. MDF may also present additional exposure concerns depending on the material and process.
Use effective dust extraction and other suitable controls. A respirator should not be the only measure relied upon to control hazardous dust exposure.
Construction, Masonry & Plaster Work
The supplied product information identifies several construction-related applications, including:
-
Brick dust
-
Concrete dust
-
Plaster dust
-
Masonry work
-
Certain metalworking operations
-
Loft insulation
However, these tasks can produce substantially different respiratory hazards.
For example, drilling, grinding or cutting brick and concrete may generate respirable crystalline silica, which can cause serious long-term lung disease.
Certain metalworking activities may also generate hazardous particulate contaminants.
Important: Do not assume FFP2 is sufficient for all brick, concrete, masonry or metalworking tasks. Higher-rated respiratory protection, effective extraction or other controls may be required.
The masks are not intended for welding applications.
Loft Insulation Applications
The Scan FFP2 Disposable Masks are also described for use with loft insulation.
Some insulation materials can release airborne fibres and dust during installation, removal or disturbance.
The appropriate respiratory protection depends on the insulation material, its condition and the work being performed.
Older or unidentified insulation materials may require specialist assessment.
Important: These masks must not be assumed suitable for asbestos-containing insulation or other high-risk hazardous materials.
Understanding FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3
EN149 classifies disposable filtering facepiece respirators into three main protection levels.
| Protection Class | Minimum Filter Efficiency | Typical UK Assigned Protection Factor |
|---|---|---|
| FFP1 | 80% | 4 |
| FFP2 | 94% | 10 |
| FFP3 | 99% | 20 |
These filtration efficiencies relate to standardised laboratory testing.
The assigned protection factors are commonly used in UK workplace respiratory protection guidance and depend on correct selection, fitting and use.
FFP1 – Basic Particulate Protection
FFP1 respirators provide the lowest EN149 filtering facepiece protection class.
They may be suitable for certain low-level particulate hazards.
FFP2 – Higher Particulate Protection
FFP2 respirators provide a higher level of tested filtration performance and may be suitable for appropriately assessed fine dust and particulate exposures.
FFP3 – Highest EN149 Filtering Facepiece Class
FFP3 respirators provide the highest tested filtration performance within the EN149 filtering facepiece classifications.
They are often selected for more hazardous particulate exposures, subject to appropriate risk assessment and fit testing.
Important: FFP classes are not defined by fixed particle-size ranges such as above 5 microns, between 2 and 5 microns or below 2 microns. Protection requirements depend on the airborne hazard, concentration and required protection factor.
EN149:2001+A1:2009 Standard
The Scan FFP2 Fold Flat Disposable Masks are specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009.
EN149 covers filtering half masks designed to protect against airborne particles.
The standard includes requirements relating to:
-
Filtration performance
-
Breathing resistance
-
Inward leakage
-
Practical performance
-
Marking and product information
The supplied specification confirms the FFP2 class but does not identify the complete additional markings, such as NR, R or D.
Check the manufacturer's current packaging, product markings and declaration of conformity for full certification details.
How to Fit Scan FFP2 Fold Flat Masks
Correct fitting is essential for effective respiratory protection.
-
Inspect the respirator for damage before use.
-
Open the fold-flat mask according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Position it over the nose, mouth and chin.
-
Secure the elasticated retaining straps correctly.
-
Adjust the nose clip around the bridge of the nose.
-
Check that the mask sits securely against the face.
-
Perform the manufacturer's recommended user seal check.
-
Refit or replace the mask if an adequate seal cannot be achieved.
For workplace use, tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment generally requires a suitable face-fit test for the individual wearer.
Important: Facial hair in the sealing area can prevent an effective fit.
Disposable & Single-Shift Use
The supplied instructions state that the masks should be disposed of after each work period or an eight-hour shift.
Replace the mask sooner if it becomes:
-
Damaged
-
Wet or heavily soiled
-
Difficult to breathe through
-
Contaminated
-
Unable to maintain a secure seal
An eight-hour shift should not be interpreted as a guaranteed safe wearing period under all conditions.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and workplace respiratory protection procedures.
Respiratory Safety Precautions
These FFP2 masks are intended for particulate respiratory protection within the limits of their certification.
They are not suitable for protection against:
-
Toxic gases
-
Solvent vapours
-
Oxygen-deficient atmospheres
-
Carbon monoxide
-
Unknown airborne contaminants
-
Hazards requiring protection beyond FFP2 capability
-
Welding fumes without a specific assessment confirming suitability
-
Environments requiring air-supplied breathing apparatus
For hazardous dust-generating work, use appropriate extraction, ventilation and other control measures in addition to correctly selected respiratory protective equipment.
