High-Performance Oil-Based Primer & Sealer
Zinsser Cover Stain features a specialist oil-based, solvent-based formulation designed for demanding decorating and maintenance applications.
Unlike basic general-purpose primers, Cover Stain combines several important functions:
-
Adhesion promotion
-
Surface sealing
-
Stain blocking
-
High hiding power
-
Timber priming
-
Enamel undercoating
This makes it particularly useful when preparing difficult surfaces or renovating areas affected by staining.
The primer creates a reliable base for compatible decorative finishes, helping improve the appearance and durability of the completed paint system.
Excellent Adhesion Without Sanding
One of the main advantages of Zinsser Cover Stain is its ability to provide excellent adhesion to many suitable surfaces without sanding.
This makes it particularly useful when repainting previously decorated surfaces where additional bonding performance is required.
By providing a strong adhesion-promoting coat, Cover Stain helps subsequent paint finishes bond more effectively.
Surfaces must still be clean, dry and sound. Loose coatings, contamination and existing surface defects should always be removed or treated before priming.
Powerful Stain-Blocking Primer
Zinsser Cover Stain is designed to permanently seal troublesome stains, helping prevent them from bleeding through decorative topcoats.
Some stains can migrate through ordinary emulsion or finishing paint, leaving visible discolouration even after multiple coats.
Cover Stain creates a protective barrier that helps isolate staining beneath the finished paint system.
It is particularly effective against:
-
Water stains
-
Smoke stains
-
Nicotine stains
-
Cedar bleed
-
Redwood bleed
This makes it especially useful for refurbishment, renovation and property maintenance work.
Water Stain Blocking Primer
Historic water leaks can leave unsightly brown or yellow stains on walls, ceilings and other decorated surfaces.
Zinsser Cover Stain is an effective water stain blocking primer, helping prevent these marks from reappearing through the finished paintwork.
It is particularly useful for suitable:
-
Water-stained ceilings
-
Previously damp walls
-
Repaired plaster surfaces
-
Historic leak marks
-
Renovation projects
Before application, the source of moisture must be repaired and the affected surface allowed to dry completely.
Nicotine Stain Blocking Primer
Nicotine contamination can leave persistent yellow or brown staining on interior surfaces.
Ordinary paint may struggle to conceal these marks, particularly where staining is severe.
Zinsser Cover Stain helps block nicotine stains, creating a more reliable foundation for subsequent decorative coatings.
This makes it particularly useful when redecorating previously smoke-exposed properties.
Smoke Stain Primer
Smoke damage can leave visible staining on walls, ceilings, doors and other surfaces.
Zinsser Cover Stain helps seal smoke-related stains, reducing the likelihood of discolouration showing through the finishing paint.
The product is suitable for stain blocking; it should not automatically be treated as a dedicated odour-sealing system where persistent smoke smells are also present.
For severe odour contamination, a specialist odour-blocking primer such as Zinsser B-I-N may be more appropriate.
Exterior Wood Primer
Zinsser Cover Stain is particularly well suited to exterior timber priming.
Its penetrating formulation helps seal suitable wood surfaces, creating a strong foundation for compatible exterior paints.
This makes it useful for:
-
Exterior timber trim
-
Wood panelling
-
Timber cladding
-
Wooden decorative features
-
Cedar
-
Redwood
-
Suitable exterior joinery
Always ensure the timber is appropriately prepared, dry and suitable for the intended coating system.
Penetrates & Seals Wood
Timber can absorb paint unevenly, affecting coverage, adhesion and finish.
Zinsser Cover Stain is designed to penetrate and seal suitable wood surfaces, helping provide a more consistent foundation for decorative topcoats.
This is particularly beneficial when preparing exterior timber and porous wooden substrates.
Helps Resist Cracking & Peeling
Exterior wood can expand and contract as temperature and moisture conditions change.
Zinsser Cover Stain features a penetrating and flexible formulation designed to accommodate the demands of suitable exterior timber applications.
This helps the finished paint system resist cracking and peeling when the surface is correctly prepared and compatible topcoats are applied.
Ideal for Exterior Wood Panelling
Dimensionally unstable timber can be challenging to paint because movement may place stress on the coating.
Cover Stain is particularly useful on exterior wood panelling and trim, where its flexible formulation provides a dependable base for suitable finishing paints.
Blocks Cedar & Redwood Bleed
Certain woods, including cedar and redwood, contain natural extractives that can migrate through paint.
This can cause unwanted brown or yellow discolouration.
Zinsser Cover Stain is designed to block cedar and redwood bleed, making it an excellent choice for preparing these timbers before painting.
Excellent Hiding Power
Cover Stain provides excellent hiding performance, helping conceal existing surface discolouration and create a more uniform base.
This is particularly useful when covering stained or previously decorated surfaces.
A consistent primer coat can also help improve the appearance of the final paint finish.
Excellent Enamel Undercoating
For interior decorating, Zinsser Cover Stain provides excellent enamel undercoating performance.
This makes it particularly useful when preparing suitable woodwork and trim before applying compatible enamel finishing paints.
Potential applications include:
-
Interior doors
-
Door frames
-
Skirting boards
-
Architraves
-
Timber trim
-
New woodwork
-
Suitable interior joinery
Prime, Sand & Topcoat New Wood Trim in One Day
The fast-drying performance of Zinsser Cover Stain makes it especially useful for professional decorating projects.
Under suitable conditions, new wood trim can be primed, sanded and top-coated on the same day.
This helps reduce downtime and allows work to progress efficiently.
Compatible with Water-Based & Solvent-Based Topcoats
Zinsser Cover Stain provides a versatile foundation for both water-based and solvent-based finishing paints.
This makes it useful across a broad range of decorating projects without restricting the choice to a single type of compatible topcoat.
Always check the compatibility and application instructions for the chosen finishing paint.
Interior & Exterior Applications
Cover Stain is designed for both interior and exterior use.
For interior projects, it is particularly effective for stain blocking, adhesion priming and enamel undercoating.
For exterior projects, it is especially useful for sealing and priming suitable timber, including wood panelling and trim.
This versatility makes it a valuable product for professional decorators and DIY users working across multiple types of projects.
Fast Drying – Approximately 35 Minutes
Zinsser Cover Stain becomes touch dry in approximately 35 minutes under suitable conditions.
This helps reduce delays between preparation and subsequent decorating stages.
Actual drying times can vary according to temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate and application thickness.
Recoatable in Approximately 2 Hours
The primer can be recoated after approximately 2 hours, allowing the finishing process to continue relatively quickly.
This makes it particularly useful for decorating projects where a fast turnaround is important.
Coverage – Up to 9.8m² per Litre
Zinsser Cover Stain provides coverage of up to 9.8 square metres per litre on most surfaces.
Actual coverage depends on:
-
Surface porosity
-
Surface texture
-
Substrate condition
-
Application method
-
Coating thickness
Porous or rough surfaces may require more product than smooth, previously coated substrates.
Tintable Primer
Zinsser Cover Stain can be tinted towards most pastel, mid-tone and deep-tone colours, subject to the manufacturer's tinting recommendations.
Tinting the primer towards the chosen finishing colour can help create a more suitable foundation for the topcoat.
Zinsser Cover Stain vs Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Primer
Both products provide strong adhesion and specialist stain-blocking performance, but they are designed for different priorities.
Zinsser Cover Stain is particularly useful for:
-
Exterior wood priming
-
Cedar and redwood bleed
-
Water stains
-
Smoke and nicotine stains
-
