Zinsser Peel Stop Clear Binding Sealer & Primer is a specialist water-based acrylic binding primer designed to stabilise peeling, flaking, cracking, chalking and dusting surfaces before repainting.
Unlike conventional primers that simply coat the surface, Zinsser Peel Stop is formulated to penetrate porous and deteriorating substrates, bind existing paint edges and create a more stable foundation for subsequent paint coatings.
Its clear, flexible formula is particularly useful for older painted surfaces where removing every trace of deteriorating paint may be difficult.
Suitable for interior and exterior applications, Peel Stop can be used on a wide variety of wood and masonry substrates, including wood siding, timber trim, rough-sawn cedar, yellow pine, textured plywood, concrete, concrete block, stucco and galvanised gutters.
The specialist formula penetrates chalky, porous and weathered surfaces, helping bind loose surface particles and secure remaining paint edges.
Once dry, Peel Stop forms a tough yet flexible acrylic film that helps reduce further peeling and provides a sounder base for compatible finishing paints.
Its breathable properties allow moisture vapour to escape, making it particularly useful for suitable older or weather-exposed surfaces.
With coverage of approximately 7.4–9.8m² per litre, a touch-dry time of approximately 1 hour and recoating possible after approximately 2 hours, Zinsser Peel Stop offers a practical solution for professional decorators, property maintenance teams and DIY renovation projects.
For anyone searching for Zinsser Peel Stop, peeling paint primer, clear binding primer, flaking paint sealer, chalky surface stabiliser, exterior paint stabiliser or primer for old paint, Peel Stop provides specialist surface-binding performance for difficult decorating projects.

Specialist Primer for Peeling Paint
Zinsser Peel Stop is designed specifically for surfaces affected by peeling or deteriorating paint.
Over time, painted surfaces may begin to fail because of weather exposure, age, movement, poor previous preparation or other environmental factors.
Peel Stop helps bind remaining paint edges and stabilise suitable surfaces before repainting.
It is particularly useful for:
-
Older painted woodwork
-
Exterior timber siding
-
Weathered trim
-
Previously painted masonry
-
Renovation projects
-
Property maintenance
-
Surfaces with remaining sound but deteriorating paint edges
Completely detached, loose or unsound paint must still be removed before application. Peel Stop is not a substitute for repairing the underlying cause of paint failure.
Clear Binding Primer & Sealer
One of the defining features of Zinsser Peel Stop is its clear finish.
Unlike opaque white primers, the clear formula allows the existing substrate to remain visible during preparation.
This can make it easier to identify areas requiring further treatment before applying the chosen decorative topcoat.
Stabilises Flaking Paint
Flaking paint can create an unstable base for repainting.
If a new coating is applied directly over poorly bonded existing paint, the finished surface may fail prematurely.
Zinsser Peel Stop helps bind the edges of remaining flaking paint, creating a more stable foundation for compatible paint finishes.
Binds Cracking Paint Edges
Older paint coatings can develop cracks and raised edges.
Peel Stop is designed to penetrate and help secure existing cracking paint edges, reducing the likelihood of these areas continuing to lift.
Its flexible acrylic film provides additional support to the prepared surface.
Primer for Chalking Paint
Chalking occurs when a painted surface develops a powdery residue, often as a result of weathering or coating deterioration.
This powdery layer can interfere with the adhesion of new paint.
Zinsser Peel Stop penetrates suitable chalky surfaces and helps bind loose surface particles, creating a sounder base for repainting.
Excessive loose chalk must still be cleaned away before priming.
Stabilises Dusting & Powdery Surfaces
Some porous substrates develop a dusty or powdery surface that makes painting difficult.
Peel Stop helps penetrate and stabilise compatible surfaces, reducing loose surface particles and improving the foundation for subsequent coatings.
This makes it useful for suitable weathered masonry and previously painted substrates.
Penetrates Porous Surfaces
Zinsser Peel Stop features a penetrating acrylic formula designed to work into porous and weathered materials.
Instead of simply sitting on top of the substrate, the primer helps bind suitable loose surface particles and remaining paint edges.
This is particularly useful on older or unevenly weathered surfaces.
Tough & Flexible Acrylic Film
Once dry, Peel Stop forms a tough yet flexible coating.
This flexibility is particularly beneficial on suitable exterior surfaces exposed to changing weather conditions and normal substrate movement.
The resulting film helps provide a stable foundation for compatible finishing paints.
Breathable Primer
Zinsser Peel Stop is formulated to be breathable, allowing moisture vapour to escape through the coating.
This is particularly useful on suitable older and weather-exposed surfaces where vapour movement is an important consideration.
However, the primer does not repair active leaks, rising damp or other sources of excessive moisture. These must be addressed before decorating.
Exterior Peeling Paint Primer
Zinsser Peel Stop is particularly useful for exterior maintenance and renovation.
Outdoor surfaces may experience paint deterioration caused by sunlight, rain, temperature changes and general weathering.
Peel Stop helps stabilise suitable remaining paint and weathered substrates before repainting.
Typical exterior applications include:
-
Timber siding
-
Exterior wood trim
-
Rough-sawn timber
-
Painted masonry
-
Stucco
-
Concrete
-
Galvanised gutters
Primer for Wood Siding & Trim
Exterior timber siding and trim can develop cracking, peeling or flaking paint over time.
Zinsser Peel Stop helps bind suitable remaining paint edges and stabilise weathered timber surfaces, creating a better base for compatible exterior wood paints.
Primer for Rough-Sawn Cedar
Rough-sawn cedar has a textured surface that can make preparation and repainting challenging.
Peel Stop penetrates suitable porous areas and helps stabilise deteriorating surface coatings.
This makes it useful for maintenance projects involving weathered cedar and other compatible timber.
Primer for Yellow Pine
Zinsser Peel Stop can be used on yellow pine, particularly where previously painted surfaces have become weathered or unstable.
It helps prepare suitable timber surfaces for repainting.
Primer for Textured Plywood
Textured plywood can be difficult to prepare because of its uneven surface.
Peel Stop is suitable for compatible textured plywood, helping penetrate porous areas and bind deteriorating paint edges.
Concrete & Concrete Block Sealer
Zinsser Peel Stop can be used on suitable concrete and concrete block surfaces affected by chalking, dusting or deteriorating coatings.
Its penetrating formula helps bind loose surface particles and provide a more stable foundation for repainting.
Stucco Binding Primer
Stucco surfaces can become weathered, chalky or powdery over time.
Zinsser Peel Stop helps stabilise compatible stucco surfaces before applying suitable decorative coatings.
This makes it useful for renovation and exterior maintenance projects.
Suitable for Galvanised Gutters
Peel Stop can be used on appropriately prepared galvanised gutters, particularly where existing coatings require stabilisation.
Always ensure the gutter surface is compatible and free from loose coatings, grease and contamination before application.
Interior & Exterior Use
Zinsser Peel Stop is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, making it useful for a wide range of decorating and maintenance projects.
Its primary role is to stabilise problem surfaces before repainting rather than to serve as a decorative finishing coat.
Helps Extend the Life of Repainting Projects
Painting directly over unstable surfaces can lead to premature coating failure.
By helping secure remaining paint edges and bind loose surface particles, Peel Stop provides a more dependable base for subsequent paintwork.
Correct preparation, appropriate finishing paints and addressing the causes of deterioration remain essential for long-lasting results.
Coverage – Approximately 7.4–9.8m² per Litre
Zinsser Peel Stop provides approximate coverage of 7.4–9.8 square metres per litre.
Actual coverage depends on:
-
Surface porosity
-
Texture
-
Condition of existing paint
-
Degree of weathering
-
Application method
-
Amount of product absorbed by the substrate
Highly porous or severely weathered surfaces may require more product.
Touch Dry in Approximately 1 Hour
Zinsser Peel Stop becomes touch dry in approximately 1 hour under suitable conditions.
This allows decorating projects to progress without excessive waiting time.
Actual drying times may vary according to temperature, humidity, ventilation and application thickness.
Recoatable in Approximately 2 Hours
The primer can generally be recoated after approximately 2 hours, provided conditions are suitable and the surface is sufficiently dry.
Apply a compatible finishing paint according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Full Cure in Approximately 7–10 Days
Although Peel Stop becomes touch dry relatively quickly, the coating takes approximately 7–10 days to fully cure.
Avoid unnecessary stress on newly coated surfaces during this period.
Easy Soap & Water Clean-Up
As a water-based acrylic product, Zinsser Peel Stop allows convenient soap and water clean-up of suitable application equipment.
Clean brushes, rollers and other tools promptly after use.
Zinsser Peel Stop vs Standard Primer
A standard primer is generally designed to improve adhesion, seal porosity or provide a uniform base.

-
Bind peeling paint edges
-
Stabilise flaking coatings
-
Penetrate chalky surfaces
-
Help seal dusting substrates
-
Bind weathered surfaces
