The Scan Premier FFP3 Valved Disposable Dust Masks are high-filtration particulate respirators designed to provide respiratory protection against suitable hazardous airborne dusts, fine particles, fibres and particulate fumes.
Featuring an integrated exhalation valve, a full PVC face seal and an adjustable nose clip, these premium disposable respirators are designed to combine high levels of particulate filtration with a comfortable, secure fit.
The masks have also passed the optional Dolomite clogging test, demonstrating resistance to clogging under specified test conditions and helping maintain more manageable breathing resistance during dusty work.
Manufactured from the filtering material itself, the Scan Premier FFP3 Masks cover the nose, mouth and chin and feature elasticated retaining straps and a non-irritating inner facepiece for additional comfort.
Specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009, these masks provide FFP3 particulate respiratory protection, the highest filtering facepiece class under the standard.
They may be suitable for appropriately assessed tasks involving woodworking dust, masonry dust, silica-containing materials, mineral fibres and certain metalworking fumes, provided the required protection factor and all other workplace safety conditions are met.
Important: FFP3 masks protect against suitable airborne particles, not gases or vapours. They must not be relied upon for paint solvent vapours, carbon monoxide, unknown toxic atmospheres or oxygen-deficient environments.

FFP3 High-Filtration Respiratory Protection
The Scan Premier FFP3 Masks are classified as FFP3 filtering facepiece respirators.
FFP3 is the highest particulate filtration class under EN149.
Under standardised laboratory testing, FFP3 respirators must achieve a minimum 99% filtration efficiency against the specified test aerosols.
This makes them a potential choice for work involving more hazardous particulate exposures, where a risk assessment confirms that a properly fitted FFP3 respirator provides sufficient protection.
In UK workplace respiratory protection guidance, correctly selected and fitted FFP3 respirators are generally associated with an assigned protection factor (APF) of 20.
The actual level of protection depends on:
-
Correct respirator selection
-
An effective facial seal
-
Appropriate face-fit testing
-
Proper fitting and use
-
The concentration and nature of airborne contaminants
-
Suitable workplace dust-control measures
Important: The 99% filtration rating is a laboratory filter-performance requirement, not a guarantee of 99% exposure reduction for every wearer.
Dolomite Clogging Test – Improved Resistance to Dust Loading
A key feature of the Scan Premier FFP3 Valved Respirators is that they have passed the optional Dolomite clogging test.
This test evaluates how the respirator performs when exposed to a specified dust-loading challenge.
Passing the test demonstrates that the mask meets additional requirements relating to resistance to clogging and breathing resistance.
This can be particularly beneficial in dusty working environments where filter loading may otherwise make breathing more difficult.
Benefits of Dolomite-Tested Respirators
-
Demonstrated resistance to clogging under test conditions
-
Helps maintain manageable breathing resistance during dust exposure
-
Practical for suitably assessed dusty work
-
Complements the respirator's FFP3 filtration classification
Important: Passing the Dolomite test does not make the mask reusable or guarantee a fixed service life. Replace the respirator whenever it becomes damaged, contaminated, difficult to breathe through or unsuitable for continued use.
Integrated Exhalation Valve
The Scan Premier FFP3 Masks incorporate an exhalation valve designed to make breathing out easier.
The valve allows warm, moist exhaled air to escape more readily, reducing resistance during exhalation.
This can improve comfort during physically demanding activities.
Exhalation Valve Benefits
-
Helps reduce exhalation resistance
-
Allows warm air to escape
-
Helps reduce moisture build-up inside the facepiece
-
Improves comfort during suitable work tasks
Important: The valve does not filter outgoing breath. These masks should not be used where filtration of the wearer's exhaled air is required.
Full PVC Face Seal
The Scan Premier FFP3 Respirators feature a full PVC face seal designed to improve contact between the mask and the wearer's face.
The seal helps the respirator sit securely around the nose and mouth when correctly fitted.
An effective seal is essential because unfiltered air can enter through gaps around the facepiece.
The PVC seal works alongside the adjustable nose clip and retaining straps to support a customised fit.
However, no respirator fits every facial shape, and the presence of a full face seal does not eliminate the need for appropriate fit testing.
Adjustable Nose Clip
The masks feature an adjustable nose clip that allows the upper section of the respirator to be shaped around the bridge of the nose.
Correct adjustment helps reduce gaps that could allow contaminated air to bypass the filter.
Always follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions.
Elasticated Retaining Straps
The Scan Premier FFP3 Disposable Masks incorporate elasticated retaining straps designed to keep the respirator securely positioned.
Correct strap placement is important for maintaining the facial seal.
Do not modify the straps or wear them in a way that compromises the fit.
Non-Irritating Inner Facepiece
The masks include a non-irritating inner facepiece designed to improve comfort during use.
Combined with the PVC face seal, adjustable nose clip and exhalation valve, this helps make the respirators practical for appropriately assessed tasks requiring high-filtration disposable respiratory protection.
If the respirator causes irritation or cannot be fitted securely, select a suitable alternative.
Suitable for Woodworking & MDF Dust
The Scan Premier FFP3 Valved Dust Masks may be suitable for appropriately assessed woodworking activities involving airborne dust.
Potential applications include:
-
Hand sanding of softwood
-
Hand sanding of hardwood
-
Power sanding with suitable dust extraction
-
MDF machining and sanding
-
General woodworking maintenance
-
Workshop dust-generating tasks
Wood dust can cause respiratory irritation, asthma and other serious health problems.
Hardwood dust is also associated with an increased risk of certain cancers.
Use suitable extraction and dust-control measures alongside correctly selected respiratory protection.
Masonry, Concrete & Silica Dust
The supplied product information identifies applications involving:
-
Masonry dust
-
Concrete dust
-
Brick dust
-
Silica-containing materials
-
Construction maintenance
Cutting, grinding or drilling concrete, stone and masonry can generate respirable crystalline silica.
Inhaling respirable crystalline silica can cause serious lung disease, including silicosis.
FFP3 respiratory protection may be appropriate for certain silica-related tasks, but only where a suitable exposure assessment confirms that its protection factor is adequate.
Important: Use effective on-tool extraction, wet methods or other suitable engineering controls. FFP3 respiratory protection should not be treated as a substitute for controlling dust at its source.
Metalworking & Welding Particulates
The Scan Premier FFP3 Masks may be considered for certain metalworking tasks involving airborne particulate hazards.
Potential applications include:
-
Suitable grinding operations
-
Selected metalworking tasks
-
Certain particulate fumes from metalworking
-
Appropriately assessed welding particulate exposures
Welding fumes can contain hazardous metal particles, but welding also presents other hazards, including gases and potentially high exposure concentrations.
Important: An FFP3 filtering facepiece does not protect against welding gases or vapours. Welding tasks may require local exhaust ventilation, specialist respiratory protection or air-supplied equipment. Confirm suitability through a task-specific risk assessment.
Mineral Fibres, Fibreglass & Loft Insulation
These masks may also be suitable for certain activities involving:
-
Fibreglass insulation
-
Mineral wool
-
Loft insulation
-
Other appropriately assessed airborne fibre hazards
The correct respiratory protection depends on the material being handled, the airborne exposure level and the nature of the work.
Important: Do not assume these masks are suitable for asbestos removal or unidentified insulation materials. Suspected asbestos requires specialist assessment and appropriate controls.
Toxic Waste, Smoke & Paint Fumes – Important Limitations
The supplied application list includes toxic waste disposal, smoke fumes, paint fumes and varnish fumes.
These activities can involve mixtures of particles, gases and vapours.
An FFP3 particulate respirator is not a universal solution for these hazards.
-
Toxic waste: May release unknown or highly hazardous substances requiring specialist respiratory protection.
-
Smoke: May contain fine particles alongside toxic gases such as carbon monoxide.
-
Paint and varnish: Solvent-based products can release vapours that pass through particulate filters.
-
Spraying: May generate both liquid droplets and hazardous vapours.
Do not use these masks for unknown atmospheres, firefighting, confined spaces with atmospheric hazards or oxygen-deficient environments.
Select respiratory protection based on the specific contaminants and exposure assessment.
Understanding FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3
EN149 defines three filtering facepiece respirator classes.
| Respirator Class | Minimum Filter Efficiency | Typical UK Assigned Protection Factor |
|---|---|---|
| FFP1 | 80% | 4 |
| FFP2 | 94% | 10 |
| FFP3 | 99% | 20 |
The filtration efficiencies are measured under standardised laboratory conditions.
Assigned protection factors depend on correct selection, fit and use.
FFP1 – Basic Particulate Protection
FFP1 respirators offer the lowest EN149 filtering facepiece protection class and may be suitable for certain low-level particulate exposures.
FFP2 – Higher Particulate Protection
FFP2 respirators provide increased tested filtration performance and may be appropriate for certain fine dust and particulate hazards.
FFP3 – Highest Filtering Facepiece Protection Class
FFP3 respirators provide the highest tested filtration performance under EN149 and are often selected for more hazardous particulate exposures.
Important: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 are not defined by fixed particle-size bands. Claims that FFP3 only protects against particles smaller than 2 microns are incorrect. The classification is based on specified filtration, leakage and performance tests.
EN149:2001+A1:2009 Standard
The Scan Premier FFP3 Valved Disposable Masks are specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009.
EN149 covers filtering half masks designed to protect against airborne particles.
The standard includes requirements relating to:
-
Filtration performance
-
Breathing resistance
-
Inward leakage
-
Practical performance
-
Product markings
-
Additional clogging testing, where applicable
The supplied information confirms that these masks have passed the optional Dolomite clogging test.
Check the current product markings and manufacturer's declaration of conformity to confirm the complete designation, including any NR, R and D markings.
How to Fit Scan Premier FFP3 Masks
Correct fitting is essential to achieving the intended level of protection.
-
Inspect the respirator, valve and face seal for damage.
-
Position the mask over the nose, mouth and chin.
-
Secure the elasticated retaining straps according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Adjust the nose clip to follow the shape of the nose.
-
Ensure the full PVC face seal sits correctly against the skin.
-
Perform the manufacturer's recommended user seal check.
-
Reposition or replace the mask if an effective seal cannot be achieved.
For workplace use, tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment generally requires a suitable face-fit test for the individual wearer.
Important: Facial hair in the sealing area can prevent an effective seal and reduce respiratory protection.
Disposable & Single-Shift Use
The supplied instructions state that the masks should be disposed of after each work period or an eight-hour shift.
Replace the respirator sooner if it becomes:
-
Damaged
-
Contaminated
-
Wet or heavily soiled
-
Difficult to breathe through
-
Unable to maintain a secure facial seal
-
Affected by a damaged or malfunctioning exhalation valve
Passing the Dolomite clogging test does not guarantee that a mask will remain suitable for an entire eight-hour shift.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable workplace respiratory protection procedures.
