The Scan Premier FFP1 Valved Disposable Dust Masks are lightweight filtering facepiece respirators designed to provide basic respiratory protection against suitable low-level airborne particulate hazards.
Featuring a moulded construction made from the filter material itself, these disposable respirators are designed to cover the nose, mouth and chin, helping reduce the inhalation of airborne particles when correctly fitted.
An integrated exhalation valve helps reduce breathing resistance during exhalation, while the adjustable nose clip, soft foam nose piece and elasticated retaining straps help provide a secure, comfortable fit.
The masks also feature a non-irritating inner facepiece designed to improve comfort during routine work.
Specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009, these masks have an FFP1 protection classification, making them suitable for appropriately assessed tasks involving low levels of non-toxic dust and other particulate contaminants within the limits of their certification.
Potential applications include certain low-dust DIY, maintenance and hand-sanding tasks where a risk assessment confirms that FFP1 protection is sufficient.
Important: FFP1 is the lowest of the three EN149 filtering facepiece protection classes. It is not suitable for every construction dust hazard, and tasks involving respirable crystalline silica, hazardous fibres or other harmful substances may require substantially higher protection.

FFP1 Particulate Respiratory Protection
The Scan Premier FFP1 Dust Masks are classified as FFP1 filtering facepiece respirators.
Under EN149, FFP1 is the basic protection class for disposable particulate respirators.
An FFP1 respirator is tested to provide a minimum 80% filtration efficiency against the specified test aerosols under laboratory conditions.
However, this filtration figure does not mean the wearer is guaranteed an 80% reduction in exposure.
Actual protection depends on correct selection, facial fit, a suitable seal, wearing time and workplace conditions.
In UK workplace guidance, FFP1 respirators are generally associated with an assigned protection factor (APF) of 4, where the respirator is suitable, correctly fitted and used as part of an appropriate respiratory protection programme.
Important: FFP1 respirators are not appropriate for all harmful dusts. Always select respiratory protective equipment according to the substance involved and the exposure assessment.
Integrated Exhalation Valve
The masks feature an integrated exhalation valve designed to make breathing out more comfortable.
The valve allows exhaled air to leave the mask more easily, helping reduce moisture and heat build-up during use.
This can improve comfort when carrying out suitable physical tasks.
Important: The valve is designed for wearer comfort. Valved respirators should not be relied upon for source control where filtering the wearer's exhaled breath is required.
Moulded Filtering Facepiece Design
The Scan Premier FFP1 Masks feature a moulded construction made from the filtering material itself.
This provides a lightweight, compact respiratory protective device without the need for a separate rigid filter housing.
The mask is designed to cover the:
-
Nose
-
Mouth
-
Chin
A secure facial seal is essential for effective respiratory protection.
Facial hair, incorrect positioning and unsuitable mask sizing can substantially reduce the protection achieved.
Adjustable Nose Clip
Each mask incorporates an adjustable nose clip.
This allows the upper edge of the respirator to be shaped around the bridge of the nose.
Correct adjustment helps improve the fit and reduce gaps where unfiltered air could enter.
The nose clip should be adjusted according to the manufacturer's fitting instructions.
Soft Foam Nose Piece
The soft foam nose piece provides additional comfort around the nose.
It helps cushion the contact area between the mask and the face.
Combined with the adjustable nose clip, this feature supports a more comfortable fit during suitable work activities.
However, comfort alone does not confirm that an adequate respiratory seal has been achieved.
Elasticated Retaining Straps
The Scan FFP1 Valved Masks feature elasticated retaining straps designed to hold the respirator securely in place.
Correct strap positioning is important for maintaining the mask's fit.
The straps should be fitted according to the manufacturer's instructions and checked before entering an area where respiratory protection is required.
Do not modify, knot or reposition the straps in a way that compromises the mask's seal.
Non-Irritating Inner Facepiece
The masks incorporate a non-irritating inner facepiece designed for additional comfort.
This is particularly useful during tasks where a disposable respirator needs to be worn for an extended period.
The lightweight construction, foam nose piece and exhalation valve work together to improve wearing comfort.
Users should stop wearing the mask if it causes irritation or cannot be fitted securely.
Suitable Applications
The Scan Premier FFP1 Disposable Masks may be suitable for certain low-level particulate exposures, depending on the material and working conditions.
Potential applications include:
-
Suitable low-dust DIY tasks
-
General household maintenance
-
Certain hand-sanding operations
-
Low-risk workshop activities
-
Other tasks where an assessment confirms FFP1 protection is sufficient
The supplied product information also mentions brick dust, concrete, plaster and loft insulation.
Important: These materials can present significant respiratory hazards. Cutting, drilling or sanding brick and concrete can generate respirable crystalline silica, while insulation materials may release fibres or other hazardous particles.
FFP1 should not be assumed adequate for these tasks. Follow the relevant safety guidance and use a higher-rated respirator or other controls where required by the risk assessment.
Understanding FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3
Disposable filtering facepiece respirators are classified under EN149 according to their tested performance.
| Protection Class | Minimum Filter Efficiency | Typical UK Assigned Protection Factor |
|---|---|---|
| FFP1 | 80% | 4 |
| FFP2 | 94% | 10 |
| FFP3 | 99% | 20 |
The assigned protection factors shown are commonly used in UK workplace respiratory protection guidance and depend on correct selection, fitting and use.
Important: FFP classes are not defined by simple particle-size bands such as larger than 5 microns, 2–5 microns or smaller than 2 microns. The appropriate class depends on the hazard, exposure level and required protection factor.
FFP1 – Basic Particulate Protection
FFP1 respirators provide the lowest protection class under EN149.
They may be suitable for certain low-level particulate hazards where the required protection factor does not exceed their capability.
FFP2 – Higher Particulate Protection
FFP2 respirators provide a higher level of tested filtration performance.
They are used for appropriately assessed particulate hazards requiring greater protection than FFP1.
FFP3 – Highest EN149 Filtering Facepiece Class
FFP3 respirators provide the highest tested filtration performance among the three EN149 filtering facepiece classes.
They are often selected for more hazardous particulate exposures, subject to a suitable risk assessment and correct fit.
No FFP class provides protection against gases or vapours unless a separate appropriate filter system is used.
EN149:2001+A1:2009 Certification
The Scan Premier FFP1 Valved Disposable Masks are specified as conforming to EN149:2001+A1:2009.
EN149 is the European standard covering filtering half masks designed to protect against particles.
The standard establishes requirements relating to matters such as filtration performance, breathing resistance and inward leakage.
The supplied information confirms the FFP1 class, but does not specify the full additional markings, such as NR, R or D.
Check the mask and packaging for the complete certification markings and the manufacturer's declaration of conformity before workplace use.
How to Fit the Scan FFP1 Mask
Correct fitting is essential to achieve the intended protection.
-
Inspect the mask for damage before use.
-
Position the moulded respirator over the nose, mouth and chin.
-
Secure the elasticated straps according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Adjust the nose clip to follow the bridge of the nose.
-
Check that the mask sits securely against the face.
-
Perform the user seal check described in the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Reposition the mask if leakage is detected.
For workplace use, tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment generally requires a suitable face-fit test for the individual wearer.
Important: Facial hair in the sealing area can prevent an effective fit.
Disposable & Single-Shift Use
The supplied instructions state that the masks should be disposed of after each period of work or an 8-hour shift.
Replace the mask sooner if it becomes:
-
Damaged
-
Heavily contaminated
-
Wet or excessively soiled
-
Difficult to breathe through
-
Unable to maintain an adequate facial seal
The stated eight-hour period is a maximum use guideline, not a guarantee that a mask will remain suitable for an entire shift.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and any applicable workplace respiratory protection procedures.
Respiratory Safety Precautions
The Scan Premier FFP1 Masks are designed for particulate protection within their stated classification.
They are not suitable for protection against:
-
Oxygen-deficient atmospheres
-
Toxic gases
-
Solvent vapours
-
Carbon monoxide
-
Unknown airborne contaminants
-
Hazards requiring a higher protection factor
-
Environments where an air-supplied respirator is necessary
Do not use these masks for asbestos work, significant silica dust exposure or other high-risk respiratory hazards unless a competent assessment specifically establishes that the equipment is suitable.
Engineering controls, dust extraction and safe working methods should be used alongside appropriate respiratory protection.
