The ALM Manufacturing GP290 Chainsaw Sharpener is a practical chainsaw maintenance accessory designed for small electric and petrol chainsaws fitted with chains requiring a 5/32 inch sharpening size.
Suitable for compatible chainsaws from popular manufacturers such as Black & Decker and McCulloch, the ALM GP290 provides a convenient solution for maintaining the cutting edges of chainsaw chains.
Regular chain sharpening is an important part of chainsaw maintenance. As a chainsaw is used, its cutting teeth gradually become dull, reducing cutting efficiency and making the saw harder to operate.
The ALM GP290 5/32in Chainsaw Sharpener is intended to help maintain the sharpness of compatible chains, supporting more effective cutting when used correctly.
Whether you're maintaining a small electric chainsaw for garden pruning or a petrol chainsaw for general outdoor cutting tasks, this sharpening accessory is a useful addition to your chainsaw maintenance equipment.
Important: Compatibility is determined by the chain's required sharpening size, not simply by the chainsaw brand or model. Always confirm that your chain requires a 5/32 inch sharpener before use.

5/32 Inch Chainsaw Sharpener
The ALM GP290 is designed for chainsaw chains that require a 5/32 inch sharpening size.
This measurement is important because chainsaw chains use different cutter profiles and sharpening requirements.
Using the correct sharpening size helps ensure that the cutting teeth are maintained according to the chain manufacturer's specification.
Always check the chain's required file or sharpening size before purchasing.
Suitable for Small Electric Chainsaws
The ALM GP290 is suitable for small electric chainsaws fitted with compatible 5/32in chains.
Electric chainsaws are commonly used for domestic garden maintenance, including pruning and cutting suitable timber.
Keeping the chain sharp is an important part of maintaining cutting performance.
Suitable for Small Petrol Chainsaws
The GP290 is also suitable for small petrol chainsaws using chains that require a 5/32in sharpening tool.
A correctly sharpened chain can help maintain efficient cutting and reduce the need to force the saw through timber.
Always follow the chainsaw manufacturer's chain maintenance instructions.
Black & Decker Chainsaw Sharpener
The ALM GP290 is suitable for Black & Decker chainsaws fitted with compatible 5/32in chains.
Not all Black & Decker chainsaws use the same chain specification, so the correct sharpening size must be confirmed before use.
McCulloch Chainsaw Sharpener
The GP290 is also suitable for McCulloch chainsaws fitted with compatible 5/32in chains.
Check the chain manufacturer's sharpening requirements to confirm suitability.
Why Chainsaw Chain Sharpening Matters
Chainsaw cutting teeth gradually become dull through use.
A dull chain may:
-
Cut more slowly
-
Require greater cutting pressure
-
Produce finer sawdust rather than larger wood chips
-
Make it more difficult to achieve a controlled cut
-
Increase unnecessary strain on the operator and equipment
Correct sharpening and routine maintenance help keep a compatible chainsaw chain in suitable working condition.
A sharp chain does not eliminate kickback or other chainsaw hazards. Safe cutting technique and appropriate protective equipment remain essential.
When to Sharpen Your Chainsaw Chain
Your chainsaw chain may need sharpening when:
-
Cutting performance noticeably decreases
-
The saw requires more pressure to cut
-
The chain produces unusually fine sawdust
-
The chain struggles to cut smoothly
-
Cutting teeth appear visibly dull
Inspect the chain for damaged or excessively worn teeth before sharpening. A damaged chain may need replacement rather than sharpening.
How to Use
-
Switch off the chainsaw and isolate its power source. Unplug an electric chainsaw or remove its battery, where applicable.
-
For petrol chainsaws, stop the engine, allow it to cool and prevent accidental starting.
-
Confirm that the chain requires a 5/32in sharpening size.
-
Secure the chainsaw safely and follow the manufacturer's instructions for chain sharpening.
-
Inspect the chain for damaged cutters, loose components or excessive wear.
-
Use the ALM GP290 sharpener according to its supplied instructions, maintaining the sharpening angle specified for the chain.
-
Work carefully and consistently across the cutting teeth.
-
Check the chain's condition and follow the manufacturer's guidance on depth gauge maintenance.
-
Ensure the chain is correctly tensioned and lubricated before returning the saw to use.
Important: Chainsaw cutters are sharp even when the machine is switched off. Wear suitable protective gloves and eye protection during maintenance. If you are unsure how to sharpen a chain correctly, seek assistance from a qualified chainsaw servicing professional.
